the culture show

as i lay in my bed i turned to channel four and the culture show was on it brought up some great point one of which i still cant get my head round. in the show it show u Glasgow school of art and how its been fundamental to the success of artist to be produced in Scotland. It also went into great detail about Charles Rennie Macintosh and how the design of the building was for function to merge with form as he himself knew first hand what an art student was looking for due to him taking night classes there. sadly tho Macintosh never got the recognition he deserved and died virtually unknown in France.
This is what i cant get my head round why it is that an artist becomes world renowned after he or she has died, Why not wen they are alive?
How has there work changed ?
Whats different?
Is it the people that have changed, have they realised that the people before them were wrong or had over looked these pieces of art. who know?
I agree with the voice over in the show that art colleges around the world create an atmosphere that in turn helps the creative juices to flow and allows people who aren't from an art back ground to dabble and let loose. i believe that these institutions are to be cherished and that we as students of them, utilize it to its full potential.
